Density Noir monopolar and bipolar modes — how do they differ, and how do you choose?

Read about Density Noir and you keep running into “monopolar,” “bipolar” and “MONO+BI.” They sound technical, but it comes down to one thing: how deep, and how wide, the heat goes.

The short answer

With monopolar RF the current passes through the body to a pad placed farther away, heating broadly into deep layers. With bipolar RF the current stays between two electrodes inside the tip, heating the shallow layer densely. Density Noir can use either one alone, or fire monopolar then bipolar within a single shot (MONO-BI sequential heating, Korean patent 10-2640900). It also has a Gentle mode, which does not need hard pressure on the skin, and an Infinity mode. The question is not which mode is better but which layer we are treating. At Miso Clinic, 4F Bombom Building, 125 Dongdeok-ro, Jung-gu, Daegu (Exit 1, Kyungpook Nat'l Univ. Hospital Station), +82-53-428-2700, I choose the mode after we settle your concern in consultation.

How are monopolar and bipolar different?

Monopolar, bipolar and MONO+BI compared
TypeCurrent pathMain layer treatedGood fit for
MonopolarTip → body → pad placed farther awayDeep dermis toward the subcutaneous layerSagging, firmness
BipolarBetween two electrodes in the tipShallow layerTexture, fine lines
MONO+BIOne after the other within one shotDeep + shallow layersSagging and texture together

A simple way to remember it: monopolar is “wide and deep,” bipolar is “shallow and dense.” The heat reaches different layers, so the change you notice in your face differs too.

What is MONO+BI sequential heating?

This is the technology Noir is named for. Within one shot, monopolar RF heats the deep layer first, then bipolar RF heats the shallow layer. The manufacturer states it holds a patent (10-2640900) for this method.

Many faces have sagging and texture concerns at once, so this is often where I start. That said, there is no comparison study yet showing that “doing both is always better.”

What are Gentle mode and Infinity mode?

Both are treatment modes new to Noir. Gentle mode lets output go out without pressing the tip hard into the skin, so I use it to ease the load on thin skin or where bone sits close to the surface.

Infinity mode is the other treatment mode the manufacturer presents alongside Gentle mode. Which one I use depends on the area and how thick the skin is.

Which mode for which face?

The mode I consider first, by concern
ConcernConsidered firstWhy
Sagging jawline or cheeksMonopolar or MONO+BIThe heat needs to reach deep layers
Sagging plus texture and fine linesMONO+BITwo layers in one pass
Thin skin, mainly fine linesBipolar (BOOST tip)Dense work in the shallow layer
Thin skin close to boneGentle modeLess pressure on the skin

The final choice comes from looking at your face in person. I sometimes switch modes from one area to another within the same face.

Does the pain change with the mode?

The feeling does. Monopolar is closer to a heavy heat deep down; bipolar feels more like a prickle near the surface. Noir sprays gas cooling before and after shots, with cooling strength set at 5 levels.

I ask about the heat in each area and adjust output and cooling to match. Heat is the signal that helps prevent burns, so I keep numbing light.

If the mode is right, is the result settled?

No. The result depends on more than the mode: whether your concern is the kind RF can help, and whether the tip, shot count and settings for each area fit. A face that has lost volume will not be filled by any mode.

For how Noir differs from another RF device such as XERF, see Density Noir vs XERF.

Density Noir modes: frequently asked questions

Is Density Noir monopolar or bipolar?

Both. It can use monopolar or bipolar alone, or MONO+BI, which fires the two in sequence within one shot.

Is monopolar better than bipolar?

Neither ranks above the other; they treat different layers. Deep sagging leans toward monopolar, shallow texture toward bipolar.

Does Gentle mode hurt less?

It does not need hard pressure on the tip, so I use it to ease the load on thin areas. Pain varies by person and area, so I do not tell you “it will not hurt.”
