Why does the eye area have its own RF tips?
Most radiofrequency lifting devices have a separate tip for the eyes. We put the area and sealed count of each eye tip in one table, with why a dedicated tip is needed and which eye concerns a tip cannot solve.
The short answer
Most radiofrequency lifting devices have a dedicated eye tip. The Thermage EYE tip is 0.25 cm² with 450 pulses, the Density Eye tip carries 600 shots (area not published), and the XERF i05 is 50 mm² with 400 shots. The eye gets its own tip not because it deserves a better treatment but because it has the thinnest dermis on the face and is narrow and curved, so a large face tip does not sit evenly. Where a tip lifts, radiofrequency does not go in. Miso Clinic in Daegu uses the XERF i05 effector around the eyes. Miso Clinic is at 4F Bombom Building, 125 Dongdeok-ro, Jung-gu, Daegu, in front of Exit 1 of Kyungpook National University Hospital station. Phone 053-428-2700. Weekdays 11:00–19:00, Saturday 10:00–16:00 with no lunch break, closed Sunday and public holidays.
Eye tips by device
| Device and tip | Use | Tip area | Sealed count |
|---|---|---|---|
| Thermage EYE tip | Eye | 0.25 cm² | 450 pulses |
| Thermage TOTAL tip | Face (for comparison) | 4.0 cm² | 600 pulses |
| Density Eye tip | Eye | Not published | 600 shots |
| Density Face tip | Face (for comparison) | Not published | 1,000 shots |
| XERF i05 effector | Eye | 50 mm² | 400 shots |
| XERF E60 effector | Face (for comparison) | 600 mm² | 600 shots |
Thermage makes the gap plain: the EYE tip is 0.25 cm² and the TOTAL tip 4.0 cm², sixteen times larger. For XERF, the i05 is 50 mm² and the E60 600 mm², twelve times. Within one device, the eye tip and the face tip are very different objects.
Density tip area does not appear in the manufacturer’s published material. So the table says “not published” rather than leaving a number. Without the area, you cannot work out how much surface the same 600 shots cover.
Thermage appears only because its tip specification is public; Miso Clinic does not have Thermage. Our radiofrequency devices are Density, XERF and Oligio KISS, and around the eyes we use the XERF i05.
Why a face tip will not do
Three things combine.
- Thin. The eye area has the thinnest dermis on the face. Tiny differences show as shadow and show-through.
- Narrow. A 20 × 30 mm tip mostly lands outside the eye area. The real surface between brow bone and cheekbone is far smaller.
- Curved. A large flat tip touches a curve on one side and lifts on the other. Radiofrequency is current, so nothing passes where the tip lifts.
The third is the practical one. People ask whether a large tip at lower power would do. Lower power does not make a lifted edge touch. Contact and intensity are separate problems.
Is a small tip stronger?
At the same current, a smaller electrode gives a higher current density, and tissue heating rises with the square of that density. Double the density and heating quadruples. So a small tip heats a narrow spot harder; this is established textbook electrosurgery.
Depth runs the other way. Physics and measurements from other fields point to larger electrodes reaching deeper: 8 mm cardiac electrodes made deeper lesions than 4 mm ones, and moving from a 22G to a 16G needle in pain medicine widened lesions by 58 to 65%.
One thing needs to be clear. We found no study measuring depth by tip size in human skin. The only human study that compared tip sizes (a monopolar device other than XERF, 3 cm² versus 4 cm², split-face in 31 people) found no statistically significant difference between the two tips (p=0.845). Its conclusion is nonetheless worded as if they differ.
So we do not describe eye tips as “stronger and shallower”. What is certain is area and contact.
A dedicated tip does not solve every eye concern
Eye concerns are not one thing, so radiofrequency is the answer for some and not for others.
| Concern | Direction |
|---|---|
| Thin texture and laxity | Consider an RF eye tip |
| Hollowing and grooves (shadow) | Treatments that work at depth — often not radiofrequency |
| Dark circles (colour) | Separate the cause first; heat often does not solve it |
| Lines that appear when smiling | Botulinum toxin territory |
Dark circles rarely have one cause. A study that classified 65 people with ultrasound found pigmented 5%, vascular 14%, structural 3% and mixed 78%. That is why “eye lifting” cannot be a single answer.
What to ask at a consultation
- Is my eye concern texture, hollowing or colour?
- Which device, which tip, how many shots?
- The eyes alone, or continued from a full-face treatment?
The third is rarely asked but affects the result: treating the eyes alone can leave an edge between eye and cheek. At Miso Clinic we more often continue the eye area from a full-face plan.

Eye RF tips: frequently asked questions
Why does the eye area use its own tip?
It has the thinnest dermis on the face and is narrow and curved, so a large face tip does not sit evenly. Where a tip lifts, radiofrequency does not go in.
How many shots does an eye tip have?
It depends on the device: Thermage EYE 450 pulses, Density Eye 600 shots, XERF i05 400 shots. These are sealed specifications, not recommendations.
What is the area of the Density eye tip?
It is not in the manufacturer’s published material, so we cannot calculate how much surface its 600 shots cover.
Could a large tip at lower power be used instead?
Lower power does not make a lifted edge touch. Contact and intensity are different problems.
Is an eye tip stronger than a face tip?
A smaller area raises current density and heats a narrow spot harder. But no study has measured this by tip size in human skin, and the only human comparison of tip sizes was not significant (p=0.845), so we do not state it as fact.
Will eye RF improve dark circles?
Dark circles usually have mixed causes; 78% were mixed in a 65-person study. Heat often does not solve them, so the cause comes first.
Which tip does Miso Clinic use around the eyes?
The XERF i05 effector. Miso Clinic does not have Thermage.

- Density tip specifications — Jeisys Medical published data: ALPHA 600 shots · Eye 600 · Face 1,000 · Body 600. Tip area does not appear in any manufacturer material we could find, so the table says “not published”.

Gastrointestinal Endoscopy Clinics of North America 2023;33(1):29–40, DOI 10.1016/j.giec.2022.07.001: “temperature in tissue rises as a square of the current density”. There is a counter-example — Linhart M et al., Europace 2009;11(5):565–570, PMID 19251707 (in vitro liver tissue, the larger electrode was not deeper). None of these is skin.
- The only human study comparing tip sizes — Yang YS, Kim DH, Ha JH et al., J Clin Aesthet Dermatol 2024;17(2):20–22, PMID 38444428. A monopolar RF device other than XERF, 3 cm² versus 4 cm² tips, split-face in 31 people. The between-tip comparison reported in the text was p=0.845, not significant; the p<0.001 figures are before-versus-after. The authors’ conclusion nonetheless reads as if the tips differ. Temperature and depth were not measured.
